Why are children carrying big stones?

In Johannesburg, I had a chance to meet up with a Cameroonian civil engineer who used to work in the office where I work now. I asked him what the most memorable scenery he saw in Burundi was.

“I saw kids walking towards school with a big stone in hand, and wondered why they were carrying stones. Then after, I saw the “classroom” under the tree, and the kids were sitting on these stones. “

This was in 2005, when the primary school fee was abolished and there was a sudden expansion of enrollment rate. Just picturing this scenery made my eyes hot.


研修で行ったヨハネスブルグで、以前ブルンジ事務所で働いていたカメルーン人に会う機会があった。先月の暴動で国内避難民となった在南アフリカの移民労働者たちの一時的な居住施設を建設するのに、マラウィ事務所から助っ人として来たのだそう。その彼に、ブルンジ滞在中に遭遇した教育の現場で、最も印象深かった光景は何かと聞いた。

「出張で行った地方で、子どもたちが大きな石を持って歩いていたんだ。どうして石を担ぎながら学校に向かっているのかと思っていた。学校に着くと、木の下で、子どもたちが石に座って授業を受けていた。」

2005年のことだったらしい。授業料が廃止され、小学校が無償化したため就学率が一気に上がった年だ。子どもが石を担いで学校へ向かう姿を想像すると同時に、目じりが熱くなった。


En Johannesburg, tenía la oportunidad de encontrar a un ingeniero de Cameroon que trabajaba en la oficina de Burundi (donde trabajo ahora). El vinó de Malawi para ayudar en el construcción del campamientos de los trabajadores immigrantes que son ahora “desplazados internos” a causa del conflicto reciente de Johannesburg. Fue en el año 2005, cuando la matrícula de la educación primaria fue eliminada, e inscripción aumentó drásticamente.

Imaginando esta escena me hizó sentir mis ojos calientes.
