I want to share his story.

I forgot to ask his name, but he was a "watch man" who had his small stand one minute away from my office. So I used to greet him every morning on my way to the office. Sometimes we chatted for a minute or two, and I learned that he has 15 children-- 6 son and 6 daughters (?? they don't add up to 15... ), and some of his children had died young. He said he walked everyday from his neighbourhood which must be around 7km away.

When the insecurity got heightened, I could not go to the office. After two weeks or so, I saw him at his usual place, and we greeted. I was happy to see him again. I asked him if everything was all right, and he replied, no. Apparently, he no longer had his wooden stand. All the used watches on sale were lying on a cloth laid on dirt street. He told me that that Thursday afternoon, when we were told to leave the Office quickly due to the fighting nearby, his stand was taken away by armed men. Then he took his cap away, and showed me a bruise on top of his head, and a trail of blood inside his cap. Around the same time, he was stopped by "armed men" who took his telephone etc. away and hit him to bleed, in his neighbourhood. He said he was treated at a nearby clinic ran by MSF.

This man, who was making his life out of a modest watch repairing/selling business, had no reason to be deprived of his right to work, right to protection, and the right for the most basic human respect.

I wanted to support him but didn't know how to (I didn't want to just give out money). So I asked him how much it would cost him to buy a new stand to put the watches, and gave him that amount. I also picked the yellow clock, and asked him to repair it for me. The guard who was accompanying me whispered why I did not buy a new clock in a nearby supermarket ran by a Lebanese, that they would be nicer. I told him that I wanted to support this man's business, and he nodded.

So I have with me now this yellow clock. Not that I really like the style, but as a reminder of how difficult the life is for many people in this continent, and of their courage, and smile, despite the bitterness they bite, maybe today, again.

At Douala airport, I was at the Kenya Airways' office arranging the delivery of my suitcase that was left behind in Nairobi. A young man in uniform and plastic gloves came into the office with teary eyes. His colleague asked what happened, and the young man replied that he just carried out the corpse from the carrier. He took the gloves out from his hand, and I offered him some wet tissues. Wiping his fingers, he attended my case in calm.

I remembered a lady at the baggage pick-up section earlier shouting at the phone, demanding her counterpart to take care of the corpse, and to provide some gloves for the risks of ebola. With all rumours and realities, I admired this young man's professional attitude.

アブドゥライは二十歳のMamou(首都コナクリから車で5時間)の田舎出身の男の子だ。

昨日いつものように事務所前に駐車すると、アブドゥライがいつものように「Cellcom(電話会社)のCinquante mille(5万ギニアフラン、約700円)あるよ!」

They also identified two teachers—one retired teacher and one university graduate. They will be paid by the community members, until the government can find and allocate additional teachers to this village. I get a bit annoyed at the cars that come from the opposite direction with their high lights—it blocks my sight almost completely! Then shiny stick-like objects—two of them-- caught my eyes. As I got closer, I saw a man walking with the help of the crutches. I passed him, being very careful not to scare him or splash him water. Yes, indeed, I am here now so that people living here can have even a slightly more decent, humane life. Conakry is not a friendly city for people who walk around with crutches or wheelchair in mud roads. But these men I saw have at least the freedom of going out.

Sweet potatos that look very sweet.

Women cover themselves with bright color cloths.

「Trente minutes (30

「Oui」

Although the third year in a country does not bring as many daily discoveries as the first year, I had something that made me feel like I discovered something new today.

A friend in Japan donated junior-size soccer balls, and I brought them to the orphanages last weekend and was going to deliver them today to a primary school where the two children of our gardener Amedee attend. Amedee has been working for the same house during the past ten years, and he asked us if we could hire him as a gardener when my housemate and I moved into this house in January. Amedee hardly initiates talk. I know little about Amedee other than the fact that he smokes once in a while and lives in a neighborhood called Kanyosha.

Few days ago, I asked Amedee if he could accompany me to his sons' primary school in Kanyosha during my lunch time, and he agreed. I checked where Kanyosha was in the Bujumbura map, and we left the house. As I drove following Amedee’s direction, I felt we were driving towards somewhat different direction, but I continued driving for another 15 minutes or so. Bujumbura is small that 15-minute drive would already take you out of the capital city. Besides, I realized that the road we were driving on was the one that led to Ijenda, a cool resort popular for weekend trips.

I: How long more do we drive to get to the school?

(silence for a while)

Amedee: Trente minutes (30 minutes)

If we continue driving for another 30 minutes, we would already be in Ijenda! Besides, I won't make it back during my lunch time! To begin with, how could Kanyosha be so far? Many thoughts came at once, and I immediately made a U-turn.

I: Kanyosha seems quite far.

Amedee: Oui, c'est loin (Yes, it’s far).

I: We won’t have enough time today, so could we try Friday afternoon?

Amedee: Oui (Yes).

What I realized later on was that there were two “Kanyosha's: a zone in the capital Bujumbura; and one of the “communes” of the neighboring province. I only knew of Kanyosha in the capital, and the Kanyosha where Amedee lived was the latter.

When I open the curtain at around 7am, Amedee is already watering the garden. I thought he was commuting from the mountain just next to our neighborhood as our landlord told us once that he lived “over there” pointing the mountains. However, he actually leaves home at 5am every morning and takes two buses to come to our house. When we invited his two children to the lake the other day, it must have taken something like two hours for them to come all the way from the “Kanyosha.” I recall the boys saying that they saw the Lake Tanganyika for the first time.

There are still many things I am not aware of. And it is not difficult to continue being unaware of them, even though they are the facts and realities just next to me.

I felt rejuvenated as if I had a new discovery while driving along the U-turned road.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652240484329855662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4586908176552011341.post-32930127711872864332009-11-05T20:05:00.001+02:002009-11-05T20:09:50.790+02:00Breakfast in the countryside

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652240484329855662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4586908176552011341.post-82089707181773330282009-11-05T19:52:00.003+02:002009-11-05T20:10:45.588+02:00Prof.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652240484329855662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4586908176552011341.post-25399932319744450792009-08-11T07:05:00.004+02:002009-08-12T22:26:10.836+02:00Sunset in Ruyigi

The sunset in Ruyigi, the eastern province, usually has deeper red than the one in Bujumbura.

A year and half passed by quickly in Burundi. There were these unfinished sentences that I had written a few months after arriving here. I didn’t know how to conclude it and still don’t know. I realized that I wouldn’t know it even in years, either! Now, I don’t need an excuse to finish these sentences unfinished, I thought, if I can update my blog that was kept silent for four months.

***

There is so much inequality and inequity in this world.
In Burundi, most people live without the minimum, basic conditions that allow us to live with human dignity (we may call it BHN- basic human needs). Food, house, clothing, health and education services, job… For instance:

Clothing: The children living in a town bordering Rwanda were shivering in the temperature below 10 degree Celsius, covering their body with torn-out cloth that didn’t have any trace of “clothing” and standing barefoot on the cold and wet soil.

Food: The global food crisis hit Burundi mercilessly. The price of staple food has gone up by 30% in the past few months. When I park the car in front of a grocery store, I am greeted by skinny children and women carrying babies saying “I’m hungry,” “Please”… even before going into the store.

House: Are people living in a mud house that can easily be washed away by 2-3 days of heavy rain better off than those who have no other option than to come to the “house” ran by the Sisters?

Just because they were born in Burundi, do they have to face so many difficulties in sustaining and pursuing their life?

But those who live in apparently harsh environment do also have their share of joy and laughs in their daily routines, and they who know how to embrace minuscule happiness may be having a more humane way of life than those unanimated children and adults in “civilized” cities.

As I walk back and forth between the extreme environments, I remain with optimism that, if we can push forward the solidarity, something is going to get better.

Why? They are simply not affordable. For instance, Burundi relies solely on imported notebooks from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The price of imported notebooks has doubled since one year ago due to the rise in oil cost that pushed the transport cost up. How can families with very little income buy several notebooks that cost almost a dollar each to their numerous children?

As part of the Back-to-School campaign to promote enrollment and retention in school, UNICEF distributed learning materials to all primary school pupils in 3 out of 17 provinces where key education indicators are inferior. The Ministry of Education distributed notebooks donated by the government of Uganda in other 14 provinces. Once children finish using these notebooks, their families would have to buy additional notebooks. When would the majority of Burundian families be able to send their children to school without making debts?

Photos from the second day after school opening.

1) Three boys who dropped out last year were sitting by the school wathcing others starting classes.
2) Packed classrooms... literally packed.

3) The classroom of Grade 2 had half of the pupils standing due to the lack of pupils' desks.

4) Talking to children and their parents at school.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652240484329855662noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4586908176552011341.post-1496946703989421502008-08-24T12:40:00.003+02:002008-08-24T12:47:09.315+02:00Nap on sand

In the center of the town, a boy was sleeping by the construction site. I asked him what the most memorable scenery he saw in Burundi was.

“I saw kids walking towards school with a big stone in hand, and wondered why they were carrying stones. Pregunté como sentía y que pensaba ella.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652240484329855662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4586908176552011341.post-55552626042937668502008-03-09T14:58:00.000+02:002008-04-13T20:33:51.654+02:00First trip outside Bujumbura

My first mission was to the Provinces of Ngozi and Kayanza, bording Rwanda.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652240484329855662noreply@blogger.com0
